Year 6 have been taking part in a plethora of WWII-themed activities to mark the end of their current History topic.

Aside from the obvious academic benefits, pupils have also experienced another valuable opportunity to spend some time within the Senior School - taking part in a tour of KHVIII to discover the bomb damage caused in April 1941, in addition to a visit to the Home Economics Department, where they experienced the challenge of cooking on a ration.

Within the Prep, children also honed their sewing skills by making sock puppets as part of a lesson in 'make do and mend'. On Thursday, we received a visit from Mr Cooper, an expert in all things World War II, and the children had the opportunity to learn about the life of the troops, including the much-coveted chance to try on his battle equipment! As part of his presentation, Mr Cooper highlighted the invaluable work carried out by the Royal British Legion, and Year 6 were proud to present him with a cheque on behalf of the year group so that their vital work can be continued.

In addition to the excitement of the above activities, pupils took part in a number of extra History lessons, focussing on the Holocaust, giving them a chance to reflect on their roles as global citizens and the effects of war today. They also took part in a sources activity, taking on the role of 'History Detectives'; examining primary and secondary evidence on the role of Coventry during the war, including the 'Churchill Theory' which suggests that those in power knew of the Coventry Blitz in advance!

One of the highlights of the two days was undoubtedly the children (and staff's) personal History presentations. These consisted of a short presentation by each child to their form on either the wartime history of a family member, local area or local hero. It is clear from the presentations and from talking to both parents and children, just how valuable an experience this was. Pupils were captivated by the stories, medals and recollections of grandparents and neighbours alike as they sought to uncover the past!

To round off events, pupils and staff celebrated the end of war (and half term!) with a truly British party. After singing the national anthem and learning about the end of the war, children tucked into the food they had made at the Senior School to mark our very own VE Day. A truly memorable few days!
